At the end of 2019, we were delighted to be asked by interior design studio Bergman & Mar to design and manufacture bespoke furniture and soft furnishings for the Makers Show Apartment – a unique show apartment created to celebrate British design. Situated at the new Bollo Lane, London W4 development by Pocket Living, the apartment is furnished exclusively by British craftsmen, artisan and artists. Over 60 makers contributed to the installation showing how a home can be created using solely original work.
The overall aesthetic showcases how natural materials and craftsmanship can create a warm, live-able space in a modern building.
The Origins Design team chose to display a modern wing back armchair upholstered in sumptuous deep red velvet for the living space. The armchair was designed specifically for Bergman & Mar and inspiration was taken from the crisp clean lines of their interior design scheme. The result is a contemporary update on the traditional wing back armchair with the perfect proportions for modern apartment living. The opening at the base of the back, adds a lightness to the armchair and the dark tapered legs give the traditional shape a minimalist edge.

The Makers Show Apartment offered British artisans the rare opportunity to see and collectively display their pieces in a residential space. Every piece, like our custom armchair, has the history and background of each designer-maker or artisan manufacturer behind it.
Bergman & Mar said “To think each piece has a story, endless hours of work and creativity invested, the ups & downs of trying to find success as a maker and keeping the traditional methods of craftsmanship alive. Every piece is built to last, celebrating sustainability, materials, and methods of making.”
We added a finishing touch to the bedroom of the Makers Show Apartment by designing and sewing a custom-made bolster cushion to match the colour scheme and design of the bed.

Other artisans and makers included Barrell Sculpture, Bert Frank, Heather Shields, NW & Co Candles and Coral & Hive. To see the video of the project and more images visit Bergman & Mar’s portfolio page.
